I spent the morning on Jamestown Island and had a great day of birds.
The highlights for me were a large flock (50+) of cedar waxwings, lots
of eagle activity, and another up close encounter with a red tail hawk.
It was a gorgeous day to be outside.
I had stopped at one of the pullouts and was watching an eagle nest when
I spotted a pair of eastern towhees foraging in the pine needles. As I
was photographing them, I felt something wizz by and looked over to see
a red tail hawk land about 15 feet from me right above my truck. I
walked over to get a better picture angle and he was intently watching
something in the tree to his left. As I watched him, he pounced down
into a pile of brush entangled in vines of the next tree over and caught
a bug of some kind. He ate it and then hopped up on the branch above.
Sat there for a few minutes and then moved on down the road. Beauty of
a bird.
