Sharon Lynn and I visited the Julie J. Metz Wetlands Bank this morning
looking for Chats and Blue Grosbeaks. We were rewarded with great views
of Chats, but no grosbeaks. For those planning a visit, I would
recommend bringing a machete. Except for the trail running straight
west from the parking lot, the trails are overgrown and, in places,
impassable. We probably covered only about half of the trails. If you
like lush vegetation, this is your place. Ticks were pretty bad, but we
encountered no mosquitos or other flies.
We encountered quite a few young birds, either being fed by parents or
newly independent. I wish confirming breeders were as easy at Dyke
Marsh!
