VA-Birders,
Sharon Lynn and I birded Julie Metz, Leesylvania SP, and Neabsco Creek
this afternoon. The best bird of the day was a Common Golden-eye--make
that 7 of them--seen from the Freestone Point fishing pier at
Leesylvania. Four of them, three drakes and a hen, were quite close to
the pier giving us super looks. We also saw many Common Mergs and a
few Hoodies, Blacks, and Mallards, as well as a few Lesser Scaup, but
there was lots of ice and little open water. We couldn't find as many
Bald Eagles as Fred Atwood did yesterday and also missed his
Red-breasted Mergansers. We saw only 3 Bald Eagles.
At Neabsco Creek we managed to spot two Lesser Black-backed Gulls
amongst the many hundreds of the Ringers, Herrings, and Greater
Black-backs.
Julie Metz was relatively quiet, where 2 or 3 Fox Sparrows and a
Kestrel, were the highlights.
