Joined by Gordy Adamski and Diana Pesek, we arrived at Kevin Bingham's
residence adjacent to Countryside Golf Course in Roanoke by 8:30 a.m. Kevin
soon joined us for a very enjoyable morning observing the flycatcher. A
special "THANKS" to Kevin for being such a wonderful host and providing
chairs during our vigil on the golf course.
Only one flycatcher, presumed to be a female, was observed for little over
three hours, between 8:50 a.m. to 12 noon. A short write-up with few pics
can be found at web site (link below).
On return trip we took detour along Rt. 876 in Augusta County and located a
single Loggerhead Shrike.
(Special notes: 1. A Great Horned Owl was observed along the far left
shoulder of the emergency lane of the I-81 southbound lane near Exit #180
approximately 8:10 a.m. It was on the ground and we could easily see the
"horns" and saw it as it turned its head and appeared ok. 2. At the golf
course a juvenile Blue Jay fell from a tree branch, landing rather hard and
making very loud squawks. Initially we thought it may have injured its
wing but eventually it flew a short distance with parents escorting it
along the way before it returned to the same lower branch. Before flying
off the bird seemed "healthy" apearing. It was a short time later when we
heard another loud squawk and when we turned we observed a young juvenile
Blue Jay, presumably the same one, had fallen down on the ground in same
spot as before. This time the bird did not move and sadly we discovered it
was dead and upon closer inspection we could not detect any outer trauma.)
