A highlight of a trip to various areas between Leesburg and Lucketts yesterday
morning was finding a group of about 10 Horned Larks scouring a bare patch in a
dry field, along with several Killdeer. At least one was a juvenile. A Blue
Grosbeak sang nearby, and many juvenile Rough-winged Swallows lined up on the
wires overhead. Later, after joining a group to survey a private property, we
found a juvenile Dickcissel and juvie Grasshopper Sparrows, as well as flushing
a young Wild Turkey. At a farm pond was a group of Pectoral and Least
Sandpipers. The morning started out delightfully pleasant but heated up
quickly, so it was nice to be rewarded with some good bird activity, as well as
lots of butterflies.
