Paul Glass, Mary Foster, Tony Adcock and I spent some time at Dick Cross WMA
and Kerr Reservoir in Mecklenburg Co. today. Not much going on at Dick Cross
other than the expected species. Kerr was quiet too with the highlights being a
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, previously reported by Jeff Blalock, below the dam and a
MERLIN that posed quite nicely at Palmer Point Day Use Area. After the Merlin
got tired of us hanging around, he took out his frustrations on an unsuspecting
RING-BILLED GULL. Seemed like he was having fun chasing the gull around!! A few
COMMON LOONS were present and at least one HORNED GREBE but not much else. The
lake is very low, the lowest I've ever seen it. At the end of our day, Paul and
I enjoyed a nice flock of RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at the marsh on route 1. Good
birding.
