I enjoyed birding with Paul Glass, Mary Foster and Bruce Richardson at Kerr
Reservoir in Mecklenburg County today. The most interesting bird of the day was
a first winter LAUGHING GULL that circled the parking lot at Tailrace Park a
couple of times before disappearing out of sight. A few BONAPARTE'S GULLS have
returned for the winter as have a few HORNED GREBES and COMMON LOONS. Waterfowl
on the lake included a raft of AMERICAN COOTS and two male HOODED MERGANSERS
hanging out with a group of GADWALL. At Dick Cross WMA, several FOX SPARROWS
were noted and a few were singing on this balmy day. An adult WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW was still present along a hedgerow where one or two have been seen
recently. The only waterfowl At Dick Cross was found at the wetlands behind the
dog kennels and was comprised of a few dozen GADWALL and a few GREEN-WINGED
TEAL. Good birding.
