John Little, BJ Westerveldt and I were the only Northern Virginians among
about
20 birders during the course of the day looking for the Pacific Loon. We
arrived
about 9:00 and I left at 4:00 (that's & HOURS, folks). BJ and John had enough
sense to leave well before I did.
However, we had some really cool birds at the lake: One Red-throated Loon,
seen by just about everyone who was there. Also, late in the day there were
5 White-winged Scoters! Plus 16 Redheads. Not too bad for not seeing
the target bird! There were lots of Common Loons, and at least one of these
had us quite excited (dark back, small bill), but every time it got close
enough
to really see it (this is a large body of water!), it turned out to be a
Common.
