The last few days I have had the opportunity to observe birds up high on the
Elizabeth River. My job has had me working above the island of a carrier
like ship, and I have been able to observe a lot of sea gulls, some terns,
and many pigeons from up high. However, the excitement of the day was able
to see this reddish-brown bird fly with its wings swept back but not
gliding. It landed on another part of the ship and I noticed it was a lone
kestral. I was literally within 10 yards of it. Kestrals are extremely
fast, and although I was hoping it was one of the Peregrine Falcons located
on the Jordan Bridge (which was 1/2 mile away and within view of where I
was) it was still an awesome sight to see.
