Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here. I believe I saw a FOS female CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER in front of my house in Oakton (Fairfax County) at 5:30 PM today. I had several good looks with the sun behind me: crisp white eye-ring, tiny warbler bill, yellow on the top of the head, gray wings with light stripes, smoothly fading to white underneath with faint yellow shading on sides. No streaking on the underside, no eyestripe. Not at all like several Pine W's I've seen this week.

Also, this morning I visited two locations on Pleasant Valley Drive in western Fairfax County: the power line cut through the woods in the Hunter-Hacor area; and Sully Woodlands south of Braddock Road.

Highlights there: FOS EASTERN KINGBIRD; a BLUE-HEADED VIREO; and lots of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS. Below is the full list for the two Pleasant Valley Drive locations from this morning.

I also had a very dark gray sparrow with vivid rufous crown and smoothly varying gray underside. I have never seen a Field that was this gray, or this dark. I did not get a good enough look at the chest to verify presence or absence of a dark spot, so I couldn't call it an American Tree. Dang. I saw and heard many Fields in the same area; this one was hanging out with a small flock of Savannahs.

Finally, a circling hawk had a distinct dark tail (spread out) with a single white ring/stripe. I did not notice broad wings, hence, it'll have to just be Buteo sp.
