Official Counter: Anna Stunkel
Observers: Joe Beatty, Ned Brinkley, Steve Thornhill
Weather:
Winds were moderate, gusty, and mainly from the east, with overcast skies
and some showers in the afternoon. Temperatures were in the high sixties to
low seventies.
Raptor Observations:
The season kicked off with an Osprey landing on the telephone pole at
precisely 6:30 am EST. The bird proceeded to enjoy its breakfast (a large
fish) on the pole, and then sat there in a food coma for several hours.
There was nice diversity today, and about half of the flight was composed
of Ospreys. We had some great looks at Bald Eagles, harriers, and falcons
as well. A peregrine zoomed by very low and close overhead.
Non-raptor Observations:
Hundreds of Purple Martins were on the move. At least 30 Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers flew overhead! A single flock of nine Great Blue Herons passed
by, along with a few other singletons throughout the day. Other highlights
included:
22 White Ibises and 5 Glossy Ibises (including one mixed flock of 9 White
Ibises and 5 Glossy Ibises)
1 Common Nighthawk
1 Great Crested Flycatcher
