Observation start time: 06:30:00
Observation end   time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 8.5 hours

Official Counter:        Anna Stunkel

Observers:        Katie Garst

Weather:
Winds were calm to light with a southerly component throughout the day.
Skies were mostly cloudy in the morning and mostly sunny in the afternoon.
Temperatures were in the high fifties to seventies.

Raptor Observations:
We observed some very interesting behavioral interactions today. Early this
morning, we heard frantic crow mobbing calls over by the east parking lot.
Katie went over to investigate, and we both watched a gang of American
Crows chasing a Great Horned Owl towards the campground. A few minutes
later, a Great Horned Owl (probably the same one) appeared with a Gray
Squirrel in tow. (Sorry, Harry; the scampermetric pressure must have been a
little off today.) A Cooper's Hawk began to chase and divebomb the owl as
it flew off into the woods behind the platform. Photos of this interaction
will be up on the CVWO blog:

http://coastalvirginiawildlifeobservatory.blogspot.com/ ;

Hopefully the owl was eventually able to eat his breakfast in peace.

Non-raptor Observations:
There was a massive Yellow-rumped Warbler flight this morning, likely
including thousands of birds. Other sightings included:

2 Horned Larks
1 Brown Creeper
1 Dickcissel

202 Monarchs
