Weather:
Winds were generally light and variable, becoming more moderate and
easterly in the later afternoon. Skies were partly to mostly cloudy, with
temperatures in the mid seventies to mid eighties. The afternoon cooled
off, with thunderstorms nearby but no precipitation over the platform.
There was a spectacular show of cumulonimbus clouds this afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
There was a decent flight today in comparison to the past few days. Osprey
movement was very concentrated, mainly occurring in the late morning hours.
Kestrels were mainly flying in the later afternoon; as always, it was nice
to watch their spunky acrobatics as they dove through the sky chasing each
other and attacking dragonflies. As Harry would say, "pugnacious!" There
was a nice little burst of kestrels that may have been brought on by nearby
thunderstorms.
Non-raptor Observations:
The non-raptor highlight of the day was a flock of 15 Black-bellied Plovers
and one Whimbrel flying together, right over the platform. Other
observations included:
26 Killdeer (all flying north)
4 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers
1 Caspian Tern
