Weather:
Light to moderate winds were from the east, with mostly cloudy skies and
temperatures in the high sixties and seventies.
Raptor Observations:
A beautiful Swallow-tailed Kite flew over the platform from the north, low
over the pines at 12:25 pm EST. The bird continued to hunt back and forth
for the rest of the afternoon, remaining in the area until at least the end
of the count (and probably beyond)! The bird was enjoyed by many, including
some visitors and Kiptopeke SP staff who are new to birding. The kite
caught many insects over the course of this period, and was occasionally
pestered by passing Merlins. What a memorable experience for all. It is
possible that this bird could still be around tomorrow, and I encourage you
to stop by the platform. Photos will be up on the blog:
http://coastalvirginiawildlifeobservatory.blogspot.com/ ;
There was a trickle of falcons and Ospreys throughout the day and some nice
views of harriers.
Non-raptor Observations:
2 Semipalmated Plovers
1 Cliff Swallow
1 Yellow-throated Warbler
9 Monarchs
