Hola birders,
The past two days of hawkwatch have baffled me! Today all of our birds stayed
very low and to our west despite seemingly good thermal conditions. Yesterday
produced a mix of birds most notably three different Golden Eagles. (two were
close enough to touch!). We've also seen a few Ospreys recently. Couple this
with today's high temperature and the good number of Butterflies and
Dragonflies that have returned...I just don't know what's happening.
This cold front could push through and be productive. We'll be getting North
winds for the rest of the week (fingers crossed). I hope we'll get a little of
the West coast Love'n that little place in NJ got recently. Also, we'll be on
Red Alert for our first Goshawk this week. Although I don't expect a Gyrfalcon
anytime soon it is the season for G-birds! So keep your eyes wide! Here's
today's breakdown:
TUVU: 7
OSPR: 5
BAEA: 1
SSHA: 38
COHA: 6
RTHA: 8
AMKE: 2
Total: 78
7.5 observation hours
Other birds:
Purple Finch are regularly passing the platform along with Siskins and House
Finch is now a easy find here too. Loons continue to pass, today we had 9
Commons. Scoters continue to pass in large groups. Red-headed Woodpeckers
have resurfaced in the past two days. Killdeer are certainly on the move right
now! Palm warblers are hanging around and anything could show up this week!
Good day and good birding,
-Sam Stuart
