Howdy all,
The last two days have both been very slow at the station. Seems we just
can't catch a break. It has been nice that the weather has been a bit cooler
but
bird numbers, both birds banded and overall birds in the park, have been
surprisingly slow. Although we are not catching much, they are migrants. Can't
say
we have had anything unexpected. At this point, we'll take anything. We did
catch our first BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS of the season today. And we had a
CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW sing for about 5 minutes before sunrise this morning.
Yesterday we had a small flock of 8 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES move through the
station.
But, all in all, just very low activity.
And kids say the cutest think! We had a 10-12 year old today asked if we
caught any Golden-crowned Niblets!! Had a hard time not enjoying myself too
much
on that one! Definitely put a big smile on my face!!
Here are the totals for 8/29:
Least Flycatcher 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
White-eyed Vireo 2
Ovenbird 1
Carolina Wren 1
TOTAL ----------------------- 6
Totals for 8/30:
American Redstart 3
Black-throated Blue Warbler 2
Traill's Flycatcher 2
Veery 1
TOTAL -------------------------------- 8
I am hopefully that the numbers pick up and pick up soon. With the big
weekend (for visitors) ahead, it would be nice to catch more than just a few
birds.
Almost all of the birds banded come the first two hours of daylight. The rest
of the morning is dead. We have been closing up a bit before noon.
Hope to see everyone this weekend! Preferably earlier in the morning! ;-)
Cheers,
Jethro Runco
