Howdy all,
Ok the subject line was the cool birds, but the bird of the day has to go to
the GRAY CATBIRD. Yea, like all 136 of them that we banded today. It was the
largest one day total I have seen here in my 8 years here at Kiptopeke. I
kind of have this feeling it might be a big year for this species! ha ha
We ended the day banding 193 total birds, so catbirds were the large bulk.
We also caught our first WINTER WREN of the season this morning as well as our
first five YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS of the season. I will assume their numbers
will only build over time. ha ha That's a joke! They will have their day
shortly!
We also caught another HOODED WARBLER and BLACKPOLL WARBLER today as well.
Four species of thrushes was nice to see.
So not a bad day! We even did a small program for a bunch of Master
Naturalists too.
Here are the totals 10/2:
American Redstart 10
Black-throated Blue Warbler 9
Black-and-white Warbler 2
Common Yellowthroat 6
Northern Parula 1
Magnolia Warbler 1
Palm Warbler 1 yellow race
Yellow-rumped Warbler 5 plenty more to come!
Northern Waterthrush 1
Ovenbird 2
Blackpoll Warbler 1
Hooded Warbler 1
Winter Wren 1 first of the season
Carolina Wren 1
House Wren 2
Eastern Phoebe 1
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1
Veery 4
Swainson's Thrush 1
Gray-cheeked Thrush 1
Wood Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 136 not a typo!
Brown Thrasher 2
TOTAL---------------------------------- 193
I will assume that we will catch a lot more catbirds tomorrow, but I expect
a drop in overall numbers of birds, including catbirds. I would love to see
another 100+ birds tomorrow, but I think that will be pushing it! Three days in
a row is great for this time of year!
Cheers,
