The west Springfield kites put on another excellent show this afternoon. The
juvenile was seen flying around low for good views, perching in several
trees, and getting fed by the adults. There were two, and for awhile three,
adults today. They also flew around, perched,and brought in insects for the
kid. At one point, one of the adult kites engaged in a little aerial
altercation with a soaring accipiter, and drove it out of the area.
Moving on to the nighthawks: Sunday there had been lots of birds; last night
I could find only one; tonight there were thirty or so at 9:05, but they
spread out and got high rather fast , so I left at 9:15.
I will be interesting to see what, if any, effect the approaching storm from
the south has on the nighthawks.
