I found two LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES at the pond along the Paw Paw Trail at
Riverbend Park this March 29th afternoon, the same date I saw them there a year
ago. The Paw Paw trail starts behind the Nature Center and heads north and
then curves toward the river. The pond is on the left a short distance
before you reach the river. The waterthrushes were working the banks of the
pond's
overflow creek.
I took the long way there walking the river trail from the Visitors Center.
Waterfowl included small numbers of Wood Ducks, Mallards, Buffleheads,
Common Mergansers, Ring-necked Ducks, D-C Cormorants, and Canada Geese. Along
the
river trail were the first blooms of the wildflowers--bloodroot, toothwort,
spring beauty, Dutchman's breeches, squirrel corn, star chickweed, and VA
bluebells. Spring Azures were fluttering along the path as well.
Back home, a sole female PURPLE FINCH, the only one I've seen this season,
visited a feeder. Other signs of migration in the yard today were an EASTERN
TOWHEE, an EASTERN PHOEBE, and more B-H COWBIRDS. On the departure side,
today I saw only one of the three FOX SPARROWS which first arrived in my yard
in
mid-February.
