There were 7 birders on Saturday morning's quarterly Lake Accotink Park bird
walk. Lake Accotink Park is a large area dominated by an impounded lake, an
extensive trail system, and bisected by Accotink Creek in the Springfield area
of Fairfax County. We have been conducting more or less quarterly birdwalks
here for nearly a year in the hopes of drawing a larger interest among patrons
of this very beautiful area. We sighted about 21 species this morning, the
highlight of which was a male Pileated Woodpecker preening himself in an open
area for a period of nearly 15 mnutes. The beautiful song of at least three
Wood Thrushes also could be heard throughout the woods.
