With a thunderstorm rumbling in the vicinity I just went out on the deck to
check it out, and a flock of at least 300 Cedar Waxwings flew over, an
impressive number for this time of year. The number could easily have been
closer to 400, but I did not have more than about five seconds of viewing as
the flock sped by. The species has been unusually abundant in the area in the
last several weeks it seems, and we recorded a record number (749) on the Big
Spring Day count held on May 5th in the Peaks of Otter area (Blue Ridge
Parkway) straddling Bedford and Botetourt Counties.
