On my way back from some business in Alexandria this morning I stopped at Jones
Point Park in Alexandria/DC/MD. When looking up river from the north side of
the Wilson Bridge I spotted 13 Horned Grebes (likely in DC waters) and thought
that was pretty good. I kept scoping northward and toward the Naval Research
Lab I found a raft of over 100 more. After a couple of counts I arrived at 125
total. Incredible! 2 Peregrine Falcons were perched close to each other on the
south side of the bridge. There were also 8 Common Mergansers at that spot.
I then stopped at the stone bridge at Hunting Creek (very close by) where I
immediately found the Greater White-fronted Goose and 3 (continuing) Dunlin. I
did not see Ed Eder’s Snow Goose, however.
A stop in the picnic area of Dyke Marsh had a raft of 50 Redheads.
Now for a little lunch and then off to Pohick Bay.
