Thanks to Jan Frye, I saw two (possibly three) Least Bitterns about 10:30-
11:00 this morning. They were in front of the first observation platform. When
going into the park, you make a hard, 90% left turn, this observation platform
is about a tenth of a mile from that turn. It looks directly across the marsh
with the 3 huge industrial chimneys in the background. I saw the two fly
together right across the marsh vegetation in front of the platform. Then
perhaps 15 minutes later saw a single LB fly all the way across to the back
side of the marsh.
I then stayed for another hour or so, hoping for a photo opportunity that never
presented itself (perhaps they were just too hot to be active- it had gotten
quite warm). Although I did get some shots of a snake, snapping turtle and
immature Wood Ducks.
