My visit to Leesylvania SP in Woodbridge got off to a great start this morning
when I found a brown-headed nuthatch in the picnic area, between the restrooms
and the river. I heard the bird calling, giving its distinctive squeaky-toy
call, and then found it about 10 feet overhead on a bare branch. No question
about the i.d. As I started to leave the area I ran into Linda Chittum, and we
were able to re-find the bird. We then went up to the Confederate battery on
Freestone Pt., where an owl tape brought in a great rush of birds, including a
Lawrence’s warbler (blue-winged golden-winged hybrid). I did not get a great
look, but it had bright yellow underparts and forehead, black throat and chin,
and some black around the eye. Other birds included redstart, Cape May,
parula, yellow-throated, and yellow warblers. The hillside below the ruins was
the next hot spot, where we added Nashville, Canada, black-and-white warblers,
common yellowthroat, Baltimore oriole, and indigo bunting. At the boardwalk at
Bushy Pt. we found 3 empids together low in the vegetation. Two were clearly
least flycatchers. The third appeared greener with a narrower eye ring. Not
sure what it was. Other birds in the area included scarlet tanager,
yellow-throated vireo, ovenbird, and prothonotary warbler. A walk along the
railroad tracks yielded chestnut-sided warbler. All in all a productive
morning. The complete list is below.
