I visited Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge early this morning and was
pleasantly surprised by the level of activity, particularly around the ruins.
Birds seen around the ruins included an empid I believe was a willow
flycatcher, great-crested flycatcher (several youngsters), a family of pewees,
phoebe, redstart, black and white warbler, both orioles, scarlet tanager, lots
of rubythroated hummingbirds, yellow-billed cuckoo, red-eyed vireo,
gnatcatcher, towhee, brown thrasher, cardinal, and chimney swift. Also seen in
the park were purple martin, eastern bluebird, northern parula, wood thrush,
acadian flycatcher, barn swallow, indigo bunting, blue grosbeak, yellowthroat,
and white-eyed vireo. Neabsco creek had about a dozen Forster's terns and some
laughing gulls. Behind the WaWa at the corner of Rt. 1 and Neabsco Rd. 5 great
egrets and 6 solitary sandpipers were in and around a small pond.
