While leading a kayak trip on Lake Accotink the morning of July 4th, the group
got exceptionally close to a LESSER YELLOWLEGS on a newly formed mudflat
created by the torrential rains of Saturday and Sunday. Shorebird migration is
underway.
Also had a E. KINGBIRD on a nest overhanging the inflow creek to the lake, and
two immature BALD EAGLES, probably from the nest near the railroad bridge.
Kayaking in stable recreational kayaks is a superior method for close views of
birds. My eBird report lists 38 species during the 90 minute kayak
tour....without binoculars!
