Adam D'Onofrio and I had a nice morning at Dick Cross WMA in Mecklenburg Co.
After extended hot, humid, rainy conditions this fall, the brisk weather was
welcome and kept the birds pretty active. The bird of the day was our first
Lincoln's Sparrow for the county which we found on the back side of Clyde's
Pond in a mixed sparrow flock with Song, Swamp, Field, and White-throats.
The bird was not particularly cooperative, only giving us 2 brief looks and
no opportunity for photos. Other notables here were a late Green Heron, a
late Blue Grosbeak, a Swainson's Thrush, a Red-breasted Nuthatch, and 7
warblers including Common Yellowthroat, Black and White, Parula, Blackpoll,
Black-throated Green, Palm, and Yellow-rumped.
After lunch we stopped by Tailrace Park and found the continuing Redhead, at
least a dozen Bald Eagles, a slightly late Caspian Tern, and added Pine and
Cape May to our warbler count.
