Hello everybody!
I went to Huntley meadows this morning hoping to find sandpiper to improve
my skills. I quickly found out, much to my disappointment, the boardwalk was
under repairs so I couldn't look for sandpipers from there and had to go to
the observation deck. The water levels were higher than I would have liked,
but I sort of expected that. My disappointment ebbed when I spotted three
Little Blue Herons from the deck. I made sure they were Little Blues and
when I turned out to be right, I added another bird to my life list. I did
spot two Least Sandpipers looking for a place to land but moving on and I
saw a Greater Yellowlegs feeding near the Little Blue Herons. At first I
thought the yellowlegs was a Stilt, but once it stepped into the light and I
saw the bright yellow legs I knew it was a Greater.
I spotted a female Wood Duck near the cattails and a Green Heron was waiting
to strike not too far away.
I left the boardwalk and kept walking until I saw the informal trail and
decided to take that. I ended up walking between 1-2 miles before deciding I
should turn back. I did see and adult Eagle and heard a Red-shoulder not
long after entering the trail. I did not see much else until about where I
turned around when I saw an Ovenbird and a Robin. I turned around and walked
back to the car to head home.
Good birding,
Jacob Barkett
