I decided to bird the local parks near my Annandale home yesterday. Nothing
of note, except for 7 Eastern Phoebes and a pair of vocalizing Barred Owls
at Mason District Park and a Wood Thrush and Veery along Holmes Run.
Black-throated Blue and Magnolia were the only warblers.
I ended the day at Belvedere School (just east of the Columbia Pike/Sleepy
Hollow Road intersection) and watched the spectacle of Chimney Swifts coming
to roost in the school's chimney. The first entered the chimney at 1848hr.
The majority entered between 1920 and 1930. The last bird "hit the sack" at
1934. About 1200 birds were involved.
