With a visiting friend, gave my local patch a good working over today,
despite intermittent rain. For the kind of area it is -- suburban Northern
Virginia, on boundary of Annandale & Fairfax City, without major parks -- we
did rather well, with 53 species. Highlights were: a flight of a dozen Common
Loons, presumably having spent the night on Lake Accotink; Pied-billed Grebe;
a Broad-winged Hawk perched in our trees, rather than our usual overflying
birds; Eastern Kingbird; Northern Rough-winged and Tree Swallows; Gray
Catbird; White-eyed and Red-eyed Vireo; and Black and White Warbler.
Nevertheless some notable 'misses' - Turkey Vulture; Red-shouldered Hawk;
Hairy Woodpecker; Brown Thrasher; and Chipping Sparrow.
