All,

I birded Northwestern portion of Augusta county along Mossy Creek, Mount Solon pond and then Badger Road. The Loggerhead Shrike was seen along Badger Road ~.4 mile from the Western end of Badger road where it connects to the road that takes you to Mount Solon. The Shrike was seen along the road in an area where Cedars and small brushy trees lined either side of the road just West of a fairly substantial Sheep and Poultry Farm. Photos were taken. I can send out photos to anyone interested. I am thinking Loggerhead Shrike is not a species that needs to be written up... anybody know for sure???

The sheep/poultry Farmer came by thinking I had broke down. We chatted a bit and I was able to show him the Shrike in the scope. He said he didn't really know what they looked like but he was well aware of Shrikes in that apparently the Shrikes here had some effect on how he is allowed to manage the land, what sort of trees and such he can plant. Only hard wood trees will do. Sounded like all parties were happy with the negotiated results which is important .... especially for the Shrike. The Red-headed Woodpecker was seen in the open woods just East of this same farm.
Purple Finches were seen at the feeders of a house directly across form the Mount Solon Pond. The owner of this property has 5 or 6 feeders going and great habitat!
