At about 8:50 this morning I relocated the Loggerhead Shrike previously
reported by Linda Chittum and Teri Holland at Blandy Experimental Farm in
Clarke County. The bird appears to be hanging out in the early successional
fields along Blandy's border with US 50. The best place to park is probably
a lot along the Loop Drive near the meteorological tower (about 0.3 miles
east of the Community Garden). You'll likely have to hike east from the
tower into the shrubby area to find the bird.
I also found two flocks of about 30 American Pipits each at Blandy this
morning. One flew over the same field that the shrike is frequenting. The
second was in a large open field on the west side of the Horse Paddock in
the south eastern part of the property.
Still lots of Pine Siskins, Purple Finches, and Red-breasted Nuthatches
around. I saw a few Rusty Blackbirds at Blandy last week too.
