VA-Birders,
I had some time this morning so I visited the Lorton area to see what might be
around following the CBC on Saturday, and to check on the Nuthatch. I was
limited by two factors: access to most areas of the Lorton prison is only for
the count day, and a heavy fog then rain set in for most of the morning. I was
still able to find some decent birds, including WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, HORNED
LARK, and the PINE SISKIN. The list below is an amalgam of the several stops
made in the Lorton area. I did not find the Nuthatch, but I didn't walk very
far down the road either.
Following Lorton I looked for ducks at Belmont Bay and visited Occoquan Bay NWR
for a little over an hour. Best bird at Occoquan was the EASTERN MEADOWLARK I
heard as I got out of my car. I scoped toward the pavilion and found it
perched atop a sapling in the middle of the field, flicking its tail to rid
itself of the rainwater that had just fallen. A SAVANNAH SPARROW was found
there on the trail that leads from the parking lot to the pavilion overlook. I
noticed it as it flew from the road to some grasses with some Song and
White-throated Sparrows, being the light-colored one with a short tail. It
stood amid some grasses staring at me. The river from the pavilion was loaded
with Scaup. I scanned them but didn't pick through very hard. No Loons,
Grebes, or anything unusual noted. Lists are below:
Take Care,
Jay Keller
