The Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS) visited Beaverdam Reservoir, Banshee
Reeks, the Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project, the Rust Nature
Sanctuary in the morning and the Luckett's area in the afternoon, all in
Loudoun Co. on Sat., Nov. 6. There were 10 participants led by Joe Coleman in
the morning & John Drummond in the afternoon.
The highlights of the 53 species seen included 2 Bald Eagles, 6 Northern
Harriers (including two Gray Ghosts - most were in the Luckett's area), 2
American Kestrels, 1 Merlin (in Luckett's), 2 or 3 BONAPARTE'S GULLS at
Beaverdam Reservoir, a very immature Red-headed WP (in Luckett's), a Raven at
Banshee Reeks, a White-crowned Sparrow (in Luckett's), and 6 Eastern
Meadowlarks (in Luckett's). Yesterday there were three TUNDRA SWANS and about
200 waterfowl on the Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project; today there
were no waterfowl in sight leading me to believe the Bald Eagle that harassed a
Northern Harrier while we were three had done a fly-by right before we visited.
There were also several butterflies, mostly Clouded Sulphurs, but also a very
tattered Variegated Fritillary at Banshee (interestingly enough there was also
a Variegated Fritillary at the Blue Ridge Center this morning).
There will be a joint Friends of Banshee Reeks & ANS walk at Banshee Reeks at 8
am on Saturday, Nov. 13 - everyone is welcome.
