Birding Loudoun County, Saturday, May 11, 2002
On Saturday, May 11 the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy will celebrate
International Migratory Bird Day with a series of bird walks and bird counts
all over Loudoun County. All birders, new and experienced are welcome.
We plan to hold at least four different bird walks beginning at 8:00 a.m.
(counters are welcome to start earlier), and if there is interest we will do
more walks/counts. Some of the leaders of the following walks will be John
Drummond, Jack Hugus, Joe Coleman, Kurt Gaskill, Edna Aaron, Bruce Hill, Phil
Daley, and Mary Ann Koeneke:
- Horsepen Preserve in eastern Loudoun County adjacent to Algonkian Regioanl
Park
a.. Banshee Reeks in central Loudoun County near Oatlands Plantation
b.. Morven Park immediately to the west of Leesburg and along the Catoctin
Ridge
c.. Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship near Harpers Ferry.
If we can find leaders and there is interest we would also like to do walks on
the Appalachian Trail, at Beaverdam Reservoir and Brambleton, Balls Bluff and
driving trips around Lucketts and Bluemont. If someone wants to do another area
we will be thrilled.
If you are interested in helping out in any way please contact me at

There will be a report on the days results at the Loudoun Wildlife
Conservancys annual meeting on Tuesday, May 21, 7:00 p.m. at the ANS Rust
Sanctuary in Leesburg.
The following is the press release we are sending to local papers:
CELEBRATING SPECIAL PLACES: BIRDING LOUDOUN COUNTY, Saturday, May 11, 8:00 a.m.
During spring thousands of migratory birds move through North America to their
nesting territory. Some will actually stay and nest in our area while others
will spend only a few days here replenishing their energy before continuing a
journey that may be thousands of miles long.
In celebration of International Migratory Bird Day and the importance of
healthy wildlife habitat, the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is sponsoring
several bird walks throughout Loudoun County. Some of the sites the different
groups will visit are Horsepen Preserve in eastern Loudoun, Morven Park in
Leesburg, the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve in central Loudoun, and the Blue
Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship in far northwestern Loudoun County.
Please bring binoculars. Contact Joe Coleman at jandkcoleman@xxxxxxxxx or
540-554-2542.
