During a walk this morning at York River SP, I came across a Louisiana
Waterthrush nest with 4-5 babies. The nest was excavated in the bank along a
trail and very well camouflaged. I would not have seen it had I not
flushed the bird.
Also, two Brown Thrashers and two Carolina Wrens were engaging a Black Rat
Snake. The snake was coiled at the base of a tree, and the thrashers with
wings and tails flared were almost jumping on top of the snake. The wrens
kept their distance a little more. Eventually the snake was force to seek
cover under a log. I did not see either of the birds return to a nest, but
I suspect they each had one in the area.
