A group of us had a delightful morning at the NY Monuments area. Paula
Sullivan, Sue Heath, Ralph Wall, and I had fun sorting through the empid
flycatchers, confusing fall warblers, tanagers, orioles, etc. Best bird for me
was a
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER who had been mixing it up with a Least Flycatcher.
These
two were constantly going at it. Several other empids went unidentified along
with a Traill's. Warblers seen were: Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated
Green, Blackburnian, Common Yellowthroat, Canada (singing!), and Am. Redstart.
We saw about half dozen Scarlet Tanagers, including one colorful molting male,
and a handful each of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Red-eyed Vireos and
Baltimore Orioles. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was calling occasionally.
I find that most of the time, all I have to do is stand out in the field at
the end of the parking lot and watch the action (birds, that is) in the trees
and thickets in the field. The vegetation is high so plan accordingly.
