Hi VA-Birders,
After seeing Nick Flanders' list of birds yesterday at the Mariners Museum, I
decided I needed to check out part of the trail before going in to work today.
I started at the Lion's Bridge (left side) shortly before 7:00 am and had to
pull myself away around 8:30.
The birds were active, and it was great to SEE so many of them today.
Highlights:
- An immature Bald Eagle flew overhead as I was getting out of the car.
- Excellent views of Magnolia Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Common
Yellowthroat and 2 male Summer Tanager
- An Ovenbird foraging on the ground just a few feet away from the path. I've
never been so close to one before and this one was not concerned about people.
I was struck by the tiny size of this bird and how vulnerable it was.
- FIVE species of woodpeckers within 50 feet of each other (all the common ones
in our area)
- FIVE Gray Catbirds
- Large group of Cedar Waxwings (21) - they still haven't moved out, nor have
the Yellow-rumped Warblers (8)
Definitely worth getting up early for! Complete list below.
