I observed the Anhinga on Lake Maury from 7:00-7:20 PM this evening. It was
drying out its wings while perched on a fallen tree in the lake when a Great
Blue Heron flew in; the Anhinga proceeded to defend the area by aggressively
walking towards the heron which caused the heron to fly a short distance.
Another interesting behavioral encounter (or lack thereof) I observed in the
park today was when I noticed a Cooper's Hawk perched in the same dead tree as
a Mourning Dove and a pair of Goldfinches. The Cooper's Hawk was facing away
from the other birds, the other birds did not seem too concerned as they
preened and looked around. The activity was good early this morning, 6 species
of warblers: Yellow (1), Black-throated Blue (1), Black-and-White (1), Pine
(8), Northern Waterthrush (1), American Redstart (9).
