Kurt Gaskill, Gerry Hawkins, Larry Meade and I birded Mason Neck State
Park early yesterday morning (September 1) and enjoyed a great show of
migrants, mostly between 6:30am and 9:30am. We saw 18 species of
warbler, 9 species of flycatcher, and 5 species of vireo. We also saw a
merlin, 2 red-headed woodpeckers, turkey, and black tern. Warblers
included blue-winged, Tennessee, northern parula, yellow,
yellow-throated, Cape May, blackburnian, black-and-white,
chestnut-sided, magnolia, blackpoll, mourning, prothonotary, northern
waterthrush, ovenbird, American redstart, and common yellowthroat.
Flycatchers included eastern wood-pewee, eastern phoebe, olive-sided,
least, yellow-bellied, Acadian, Traill's type, great-crested, and
eastern kingbird.
