Mark Johnson, Peggy Lyons and I birded in the Stonewall and Concord area
(Appomattox and Campbell Counties) today. We saw seven hawk species: Northern
Harrier, Sharp-shinned, Cooper's, Red-shouldered, Red-tailed, American Kestrel
and Merlin. The Merlin, Red-shouldered and Sharp-shinned Hawks were seen from
Peggy's yard, on Phoebe Pond Road, in Concord (Campbell County). The Northern
Harriers (a pair) were also seen in Campbell County. We saw a single Snow
Goose with a flock of Canadas in Appomattox County. Other highlights were
Winter Wrens seen in both counties, White-crowned Sparrows in Appomattox County
and Swamp Sparrows in Campbell County. The rest of the nearly fifty species
seen are fairly common in the area.
