Yesterday (15th) at about 3 pm, I observed a Merlin attacking a flock of
starlings on the ballfield at Utah Park, a small recreational park at the edge
of
Fairlington Village in Arlington. The park is about 2 blocks from the
Fairlington Community Center where the well-documented and photographed Merlin
wintered last year. This bird came from that direction, but after failing in
its
stoop, continued north up I-395 until out of sight. I know it's a long shot,
but it's nice to think that it might have been the same bird passing by on a
nostalgic visit before returning to the Arctic. I was not able to check the
Community Center at sundown, and the weather today is not promising.
