Mark Johnson, JoAnne Pierce, Peggy Lyons & I birded these lakes this morning,
August 24, 2008. It was surprisingly 'birdy' as we saw 52 species in just a few
hours of leisurely birding. Highlights: a very early Sharp-shinned Hawk as the
10 Sep is the expected date in the Piedmont according to the Gold Book; what
would be a very early date for an American Coot as 5 Oct is the expected date
for the Piedmont in the Gold Book but Mark said one has been at Mill Creek Lake
all summer; Mark heard a very early Palm Warbler at Thrasher Lake as 15 Sep is
expected date per the Gold Book; the only other warblers were a Worm-eating & a
Common Yellowthroat; four raptor species were seen: Osprey, Sharp-shinned &
Red-tailed Hawks, and American Kestrel; we had a four vireo day with
White-eyed, Yellow-throated, Warbling, & Red-eyed; but unfortunately the only
shorebirds were Killdeer, Spotted & Solitary Sandpipers. Complete species list
