Birders,
It appears that the MIKIs are all around us! My husband was out trimming
the dead branches from Cicada kill on our trees in the front yard and looked
up and saw 3 raptors circling and enjoying the day. They appeared to be
"playing". On closer inspection, once the binocs were reached, it was 2
Mississippi Kites and one Red-Shouldered Hawk chasing and swooping and
circling over our heads.
It was an amazing sight as we live off Little River Turnpike and Guinea Road
West of the Beltway and are far off the path for MIKIs, we thought. Red
Shoulders we have all year long.
They were here no more than 10 minutes and then flew off. Much to the
relief of the resident Shoulder!
Then this morning at Mason Neck on the NWR, Joanna Taylor and I observed,
thru the trees over our banding station, 2 or 3 Mississippi Kites circling
overhead with the bald eagles, osprey and TV's. that was a first for our
station and we added them to our list of birds seen, heard, or breeding!
They really have moved into VA with a vengeance. Wonderful.
