I'm back in Chincoteague after flipping horseshoe crabs and freeing ones
trapped in the rocks from the retreating tide at Port Mahon, DE. The weather
was absolutely perfect today. I finally saw the black-billed Great Egret as
it fished a culvert on the wildlife loop.
I drove out to Hammocks Rd in Saxis to listen for rails tonight. The
moonlight on the marsh and the fireflies dancing above the grasses made a
magical scene. Virginia Rails called amidst splashes and strange gurgles. A
tiny fox kit prowled the grass at the edge of the road. A few
Chuck-Will's-Widows called in the distance. The sounds changed dramatically
from one place to the next. Along the turn onto Hammocks Rd frogs drowned
out any other sounds. I think they were Wood Frogs (Rana sylvatica) but I'm
still learning my frog sounds.
