This morning we awoke to the heavenly music of the Wood Thrush. The
decision to stay home for the day was not difficult. As we walked the
decidious woods, Ovenbirds were calling. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were
numerous. Two were harassed by a Ruby-throated Hummingbird. A Brown
Creeper climbed a Tulip Poplar. Near the vegetable garden the Brown
Thrashers were already nesting in yellow honeysuckle. Red-shouldered Hawks
screamed while Blue Jays tried to imitate their call. In the low land
Louisiana Waterthrush chased one another and sang their love song. Jacob's
Ladder formed a mat on the swamp and a Showy Orchis was blooming. Wood
Ducks searched for nesting places. As we neared the house, Goldfinch were
on the feeders along with Chicadees and Titmice. White-throated Sparrows
were bathing and some were singing their farewell song to us. When we
thought we had seen and heard enough beauty, a White-eyed Verio appeared
and sang while we ate lunch. At dusk the Wood Thrush sang again and we
thought - "Theres no place like home".
