Orchard orioles, cedar waxwings, a pair of lovely-dovey cardinals, common
grackles, robins, a red-bellied woodpecker, & other birds (and squirrels!)
binged on mulberries at the trailhead to Dyke Marsh on 6/2.  Even though
native red and Asian white mulberry trees line the trail, for some reason, the
big tree at the start seemed to be the most popular.Â
Also seen (and/or heard) long the trail: Baltimore Oriole building a
nest, one or two prothonotary warblers, rough-winged swallows on their
honeymoon, yellow warblers, a pair of cardinals trying (but failing) to scare
an Eastern Ratsnake off its nest in a bush, more orchard orioles, and more. Â
And on "critter watch": 6 northern watersnakes were mating next to the
boardwalk.  My private pix are (temporarily) here:Â

And if YOU take any cool pix of birds or critters eating mulberries this month
yourself in Virginia, or elsewhere, please post them to my free âMULBERRY
MADNESSâ  Meetup for Nature Photography DC/MD/VA.  I also posted some
resources for finding the bird-magnet trees.
