VA Birders,
The Northern Virginia Bird Club (NVBC) held its Nighthawk Watch at a new
location, Ft. C.F. Smith Park in Arlington Co., this year. We tallied 15
Common Nighthawks between 6:00 and 8:15 pm. About half of the nighthawks were
seen between 7:00 and 8:00 pm; several flew over fairly low and provided good
looks for our 18 participants. The rest came over in the fading light just
before we left.
We also watched the birds coming to bathe in our new Bird Stream. These
included both male and female Baltimore Orioles, Tufted Titmice, American
Robin, Gray Catbird, Northern Mockingbird, a "Yellowstart" (female Am.
Redstart),
Song Sparrow, House Finch, and several American Goldfinches. In all, we saw
at least 25 species during a very pleasant evening.
