The 21 birders who came out Algonkian Park in Sterling (Loudoun County)
experienced a magical morning. The bird walk was sponsored by the Northern
Virginia Bird Club and was led by Elton Morel and me. We started at the
parking lot next to Shelter 1 and walked along the river as far as the driving
range. We then walked around the soccer field and walked through the power
line cut back to the picnic area. We saw so many birds that we were not able
to cover the entire park. We would find a large group of birds, spend a while
picking through them, move on, and soon find another flock just as good. As a
group, we saw 17 species of warblers including several Black-throated Green and
Black-throated Blue, Nashville, Yellow-throated, Blackburnian, Tennessee, etc.
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Tree Swallows were also around. A flyover Northern
Harrier early in the walk was a nice surprise. Also of note was the arrival of
some of our winter friends including both kinglets, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers,
a Brown Creeper and a Swamp Sparrow.
