Ten people came out for a Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at Huntley
Meadows this morning. The day started out cloudy, but eventually it
got sunny and warm. The first good birds we saw were a Yellow Warbler
and two Black and White Warblers in the parking lot. The woods were
quiet, but as soon as we stepped onto the boardwalk we saw Hummingbirds
flying around all over the place. We estimated about 18 Hummers total
in the park, but this might be a conservative number. There were also
a lot of wading birds in the park with 10 Juvenile Little Blue Herons,
2 Snowy Egrets, 3 Green Herons and several Great Egrets and Great Blue
Herons. The only shorebirds were Killdeer and Solitary Sandpipers.
The best bird though, was a Least Flycatcher seen well and often flying
around below the tower. This was my first sighting of a Least
Flycatcher at Huntley Meadows. Here's the list:
